How To Stay Well: Natural Remedies for the Common Cold

Updated: Jan 15, 2021

As temperatures continue to drop, the cold and flu virus stays in the air longer, increasing our chances of getting sick. On several occasions, I've witnessed people forgetting to cover their mouths when coughing or sneezing, which doesn't help either.

Most cold medications on the market only target cold symptoms instead of giving your body the tools to fight off sickness. The natural remedies for the common cold found in this article, will help your body get back to feeling100%, FAST!

Lemon, Ginger, Tumeric, Cayenne Shot

At the first sign of a cold, I always whip up this tiny but powerful concoction. The four ingredient shot gives you energy, opens up your mucus membranes (stuffy nose), and even soothes a sore throat. All while giving your immune system a major boost. The classic juice shot can be taken daily to cleanse the body, detoxify organs, and even boost metabolism. I follow the Minimalist Baker recipe for the perfect shot every time. When I'm on the go I like to stop by my local juice shop for a quick $3 fix.

Vitamin C

At the early stages of the common cold (i.e. runny nose, sore throat) its imperative to aid your immune system in its fight with the nasty bacteria trying to taking over your body. The best way to boost your immune system is eating foods filled with Vitamin C, and I'm not just talking about oranges.

Essential Oils

Eucalyptus and Lavender happen to be my favorite essential oils to diffuse. Eucalyptus clears up nasal congestion, while Lavender brings me a sense of calm and comfort. Numerous essential oils can provide a natural emotional and physical relief for common cold symptoms. Check out this article on Bustle, "The 8 Best Essential Oils For Colds And Congestion", for more info.

Mullien Tea

Mullien is a powerful herb said to clear out lungs, and respiratory infections. It helps the body get rid of excess mucus from the throat and nasal passages. Many people drink the herb as a hot tea. It's used best for breathing conditions such as a bad cough, pneumonia, bronchitis, and sore throat. Find out more about the amazing benefits of Mullien tea

Daily Multi-Vitamin

This winter has been unforgiving. Everywhere I go someone is sneezing or coughing. So far I've been lucky enough not to get whatever bug has been going around. I think that's largely thanks to the Multi Vitamin I've been taking everyday. The right vitamin keeps your body and immune system balanced enough to fight off any incoming germs. We don't always eat enough of the proper foods to give our body the nutrients it needs. Multi-vitamins can pick up the slack. I've been taking the Garden of Life Multivitamin but any balanced vitamin shall do.
